Last match report:
Last match for Cockermouth B was played against the leaders of the first division, Carlisle B, who were just half a point above our first team Cockermouth A. Being themselves bottom of the league Cockermouth B had two stakes: (i) get more points to lift up from the relegation zone, (ii) take points away from Carlisle B to help their brother team to reach the top of the division. At the end of the day, the 2-2 draw seemed to have achieved these objectives to some extent.
Neil Jones was first to finish on board 3, after he took hold of the centre with queen and rooks, tying Bruce Wallace's pieces to the defence of his king and supporting the advance of his passed pawns. Facing increasing pressure, Bruce had no other choice left than resigning.
On board 1, John Jarmany was fighting with Michael Green for the control of the centre. As it turned out, Michael's pieces were also controlling strategical squares on John's castling, which he exploited well later when John started to be short on time.
The fate of the match was then decided on the two remaining boards. At a first glance, William Henderson's game looked like it was lost, due to the huge pressure Alan Hiatt had put on his castling, including far advanced pawns and several pieces flying around. However Bill had an ingenious way to hermetically block the position. Safe in his impregnable fortress, Bill's king could still move on a couple of squares. Alan, seeing that he could not reach it, unless he risked dubious sacrifices, resolved to propose a draw.
Finally, on board 2, Philippe Gleizon had a better start, gaining both space and tempo. However a couple of inaccurate pawn moves freed Paul Rivers's knights, which he used to unleach dangerous fork threats. Philippe managed to save his now scrambling position at the cost of a pawn. Luckily, Paul was so short on time and feared that his flag could fall at any second, that he gladly accepted Philippe's draw offer.
Next match will be at home, on February 12th, against Carlisle A, at the Redfurn house, near Austin Friars school.
