The match between Cockermouth B and Penrith B was the last match scheduled for the season, although technically it is was not the last match, as our encounter with Carlisle C was postponed, and also as we could still potentially play Kendal for the play-offs.

However our match against Penrith B was key as both teams arrived at the end of the season with hope to win the league. Decided to get a the most points as possible, Cockermouth selected their strongest team.

On board 2, Philippe Gleizon put pressure on the queenside but Kevin Southernwood closed the position. which looked every move more like a draw. Swithching the initiative on the other side, the game opened in front of Black's castling, giving Philippe the opportunity of a decisive mating attack.

On board 4, Ian Stone got a piece for a pawn and progressively pushed his opponent against the back raw, forcing his resignation.

Nigel South faced an offensive play by Steve Murdoch who aligned his heavy pieces and bishops towards Nigel's castling. Even the most resourceful player would find impossible to defend against such a strong attack. Nigel resisted well but eventually had to concede the win.

Last game to finish, on board 1, Neil Jones had a good game against Lewis McAtear but the position looked equal. The main difference was the clock. With 20 minutes less, Lewis played faster, and doing so overlooked the tactics and lost his bishop.

With this 3-1 win, Cockermouth B put themselves only one point behind the leaders Penrith B and, as it appeared later, Carlisle D. However we still had one more match ot play, against Carisle C. The 1 point gap was soon filled by getting 1.5 points in this match. At the end of the season, Cockermouth B won the Division 2 North and will go to the play-off against Kendal in a bid to be promoted to the first division.

The date for the play-offs have not been finalised yet but is likely to be in June, possibly at a mid-venue in Keswick.
