Last match report:
Cockermouth A played Barrow A at Barrow on the 8th February. We were only half a point behind the leader Carlisle B, and we were confident that, with a match in hand, we were going to move ahead. Although not disastrous, this match turned out to be disappointing and frustrating as, for the first time since the start of this season, Cockermouth A were defeated on the score 1.5-2.5

Philippe Gleizon was first to finish his game on board 4 against Alan Llewellyn. Alan started the game with the English opening and followed with a long castling, which led to a complicated closed middlegame position. Instead of trying to open the queenside, Philippe seizes the centre where he positionned his knights on solid outposts. After interesting tactics Philippe got the exchange up, giving a bishop for a rook. Alan then decided to open the king side by sacrificing more material (two pawns and a bishop!) but keeping the tempo and a very attack against Philippe isolated king. Philippe weathered the attack but, although Alan had no enough material left, he still had a perpetual check and a draw was agreed.

On board 3, a somewhat less exciting game was played between Roger Hart and Robert Mitcheson. Both players played a solid game and although few good opportunities were missed, the game progressively ran out of steam with no good prospect from either side and a draw was finally agreed.

Things were not looking so good on board 2 were Carl Atkinson missed an interesting knight move, which would have opened some good attacking perspective. A more passive move allowed Jim Woodburn to gain space and put pressure, grounding out Carl's game, forcing resignation.
On board 1, last board to finish, a fierce battle was occuring where both players were trying to open to their advantage the  kingside to trap the opponent's king in a mating net. When it started to open, David Jarmany got a superior attacking position. Unfortunately his time was getting short while Matthew Mackenzie had more than 30 minutes on his clock. As the tension was rising and the position getting complex, both players fearing to lose the game in a different way eventually settled for a draw.

Next match will be played away against Penrith A at the Beacon Social Club, 3 Duke Street, on 19th February.
