Last match report:
Last match of the first part of the season was played away against Carlisle A. After an epic journey, Cockermouth B arrived late by one hour but had contacted the opponent team so that we agreed to play with a time control of 1 hour and 30 minutes. Was it the adrenaline running in our veins after the stress of our journey, as Peter admitted later, or maybe a more suitable time control for us? For the first time this season, Cockermouth B won the match with 2.5 - 1.5 !

It didn't start too well on board 2. After 20 moves, Bill Henderson had a better position that looked promising. Unfortunately, he played a sequence of moves in the wrong order and suddenly realised that Ian Mackay was winning his rook, forcing resignation.

On board 4, however, Bill Peck played a very aggressive line against Tony Baker, attacking his king with queen, knight, bishop and pawns in an open game. Tony had no time for castling nor counter-attacking. After 15 moves, all moves were forced, Bill was chasing Tony's king over the board and eventually checkmated him on g5. Very well played, Bill!
A row of pawns was closing the long diagonal from b2 to f6. Peter's rooks and bad bishop were trapped behind, giving David an edge with his mobile knight. However, Peter resisted well to David's initiatives and even started to open the position, threating David's king with his rooks. Eventually Peter won on time having a comfortable 20 minutes left on his clock.

Finally on board 4, Philippe Gleizon ended worst from John Kelly's dutch opening, being a pawn down with a weak pawns structure and a cramped position. Philippe sacrified another pawn, trying to open the game, but with no success. After a series of exchange, leaving only the queens and pawns on board, John could not capitalise on his advantage by catching Philippe's king, queen or remaining pawns. He eventually accepted the draw offer to avoid losing on time.

Board 3, the game between Peter Blackmore and David Jackson showed a completely different configuration...
