Last match report:
First the last match of the first part of the season, Cockermouth A played Penrith A away on the 19th February. We were certain to qualify for the "top four" section of the league as only three other teams could get in front of us (Windermere, Barrow and Penrith). However, being already 4 points behind Windermere, with a match in hand, Cockermouth A needed a convincing win against Penrith to close the gap. This was achieved after our win on the score  of 3.5-0.5.

John Jarmany was first to finish his game on board 2 against Eggert Früchtenicht. John quickly positioned his pieces, especially his bishops, on key squares and did not allow Eggert to castle nor consolidate his position. It took only 20 moves for John to capitalise on his advantage and get decisive material advantage forcing Eggert to resign.

On board 3, Philippe Gleizon got the most of Dave McMath king's indian opening. Dave decided to attack on the open queenside, freeing his game and forcing Philippe to move back. Philippe held well his ground and after  a series of exchange, positioned his rook on the 7th rank, forcing the dark king to march towards his pawns. The endgame was won when Dave realised he had no other solution than sacrificing his rook to prevent his king from being checkmated...

Meanwhile, on board 1, David Jarmany played an aggressive variation  of  the  Sicilian,  taking
On board 4, a little psychological tension occurred. The game was sharp with interesting tactics, with Neil Jones having a slight advantage with his extra pawn, but nothing decisive. Time was starting to run low when Andy McAtear kindly bought a pint to Neil (and himself). The endgame was a run against a clock in an even position. Eventually Andy's flag falled first, leaving a bitter feeling that a draw had not been accepted by a sorry Neil.

Next match will be played on 19th March. Pairings will be published later.

control of the centre and threatening Robert Patla's castling. Had he played different order moves, he could have even win a rook. At the end, the position was still unresolved. As Robert had little time left, a draw was agreed.
