Cumbria chess news

End of the adventure for 2008. Cockermouth went to the play-off, but like all their predecessors, could not succeed against the very strong first division team of Windermere. A good effort though, even in the play-off, which deserved a standing ovation to our vaillant team!

Whitaker cup:
The Whitaker cup is a team elimination championship with points handicap. In the final, Cockermouth was playing away at Grange-over-Sands in a superbe venue against a very welcoming team. As anticipated Cockermouth had the big 3.5 point handicap. This meant that our team needed to win on all four boards!

On board 4, Neil Jones got an positional and material advantage from the opening against Hilary Austin. In spite of a good resistance from Hilary afterwards, Neil transformed his advantage into a winning game.

On board 3, Nigel South developed some fine tactics against Eric Charters, including a little swindle where he offered a rook. His opponent spotted that accepting the sacrifice would have resulted to a checkmate as his king was actually blocked in the center by Nigel's knights and pawns. Therefore he declined it but could not prevent Nigel from putting more pressure on him later on, and eventually Nigel won his game.

The board 2 game was less clear. Philippe Gleizon had a better opening where he put Nick Hill under strong pressure on the queen side, but he could not get decisive advantage. Nick managed to hold his position and even get some good counter-play. At that stage, Nick could have possibly secured a draw but decided to attack on the king side, opening the game in a very interesting queen-rook combination. Using an intermediate check, Philippe stopped Nick's attack and got two extra-pawns that won him the endgame. A fine game from both parts.

The result of the match was then decided on board 1, between John Jarmany and Gary Boswell. John made a couple of inaccurate moves during the game, which allowed Gary to hold well his game and even hope to win it. Everyone in the room was holding his breath watching John now under time pressure with only one extra passed-pawn advantage. John manoeuvred very well his pawns,  king and knight to put Gary under pressure. There were approximately two minutes left on John's clock when Gary realised that he could not stop a checkmate in three, and therefore resigned.

For the second time in history, Cockermouth won the Whitaker Cup! An excellent performance for a incredible adventure:
In the first round, we won against SASRA with no point handicap but two default boards.
In the second round, we won against Austin Friars with 1 point handicap and one default board.
In the third round, we won against last year's champions Penrith with 1.5 point handicap.
And for the final, we won against Grange-over-sands with 3.5 point handicap.

A big cheer to all the team members that contributed to that wonderful result:
Roger Hart, Philippe Gleizon, Neil Jones, John Jarmany and Nigel South

County match:
The second and last county match of the season was played against Yorkshire, on the 17th February in Leeds at the Alwoodley Community Centre. As usual the match was like David v.s. Golliath as the Yorkshire team was much stronger in grade than our Cumbria team. Unfortunately, unlike David, Cumbria lost heavily on the score of 2-10. But this was not without some hard fight.

The only point scored by the team came from Neil Jones from Cockermouth, who played against a 130 graded player. Neil got a positional advantage from his opening, and converted it to a gain of a minor piece later in the game. The remaining point of the match was obtained from two draws.
Andy McAtear from Penrith got an early draw by trading all material. A fruitful strategy that gave half a point to the team! Jim Woodburn from Barrow managed to get a draw on top board after an intense game.
